The inspiration for the architecture at Kaner retreat comes from the homes that Sapna (founder) grew up in while living in the desert. The expansive spaces were a celebration of light, space and solitude. We have tried to retain that same spirit. The villas at Kaner are an ode to desert architecture. The exterior is made of locally sourced red sandstone from the mines in the region. The stones are a shield in the summer and a sun-trap in the winter.
As you open the ornate, locally carved ‘kiwad’ or door, you enter a private, verdant courtyard filled with scented flowers. This private space allows guests to lounge in peace and observe the clouds and stars above. Guests may sometimes be greeted by the birds and be an audience to their songs.
A walk into a room at Kaner feels like you have entered a floral art gallery, laced with the fragrances and flavours of the desert. Every room wears a different hue, texture and scent and is designed with local flowers as inspiration. Kaner Retreat is the first boutique hotel to commission desert botanical art to local artists.
When guests enter their room, they might walk into a pink palette of the Kaner, or the soft beige textures of the 'Bui 'or desert cotton, or the bright orange mood of the 'Hazara' or marigold. In every room the flower becomes the muse.
Inside the room, it is an airy affair with windows offering cross-ventilation, letting in light and showcasing the views of the surrounding wilderness. We have 10 air conditioned villas and each villa is a 625 sq ft of private space themed on a local flower. The desert sun rolls into the rooms and the inbuilt sofa cum bed is ideal to lounge on with a book. At night, the moonlight streams through the windows as you sleep under the desert sky. It is this weaving with the outdoor fabric that makes guests feel one with nature.
The furniture inside the rooms is an eclectic mix of art, antiques and pieces made with reclaimed wood. The solar panels on rooftops ensure the availability of hot water 24/7. Our luxury, botanical toilet amenities do not come in use and throw bottles. Mineral water is filled in glass and steel bottles instead of single use plastic ones. At night, dim solar lamps light up the pathways, making the stars more prominent.
